LEGAL SERVICES CORPORATION – Notice of Availability of Competitive – Grant Funds for Calendar Year 2013 – The Legal Services Corporation (LSC) announces the availability of competitive grant funds to provide civil legal services to eligible clients during calendar year 2013. A Request for Proposals (RFP) and other information pertaining to the LSC grants competition will be available fromwww.grants.lsc.gov until April 24. In accordance with LSC’s multiyear funding policy, grants are available for only specified service areas. To review the service areas for which competi tive grants are available, by state, go to www.grants.lsc.gov/about-grants/where-we-fund and click on the name of the state. A full list of all service areas in competition will also be posted on that page.
Applicants must file a Notice of Intent to Compete (NIC) through the online application system in order to participate in the competitive grants process. Information about LSC Grants funding, the application process, eligibility to apply for a grant, and how to file a NIC is available at www.grants.lsc.gov/about-grants. LEGAL AID OF WEST VIRGINIA – Legal Aid of West Virginia is hosting an ethics presentation, “Ethics Update/Ethics for Family Law,” presented by the Office of Disciplinary Counsel on Friday, April 27, 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m. The ethics qualified one hour CLE session will be presented live at Legal Aid’s Charleston office and will also be available via videoconference at each of Legal Aid’s local offices. REQUEST FOR PUBLIC COMMENT – The Court has published for Comment Proposed Amendments to Create Rule 29, Commercial Litigation, WV Trial Court Rules. The Business Court Study Committee was created by the Court for the purpose of evaluating the business court legislation passed as Enrolled Committee Substitute for House Bill No. 4352, including the law’s applicability, practicality, and any other issues the members may discover in the course of their study. EFFECTIVE PRETRIAL AND LITIGATION STRATEGIES SEMINAR – MAY 11, 2012 – WVCLE, in cooperation with the Cabell County Bar Association, will present “Effective Pretrial and Litigation Strategies” seminar on May 11, 2012, live at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena in Huntington, West Virginia. REQUEST FOR PUBLIC COMMENT – The Court has published for comment proposed amendments to the Rules for Admission to the Practice of Law, as recommended by the Board of Law Examiners. The proposed amendments would increase the passing score on the MPRE. They also exclude internet-based law courses from the equivalency policy, include the policy for use of laptops when taking the exam, set forth the administrative appeal procedure before the Board in certain instances, and amend the conditional admission provisions. UPDATES TO MCLE COMMISSION RULES AND REGULATIONS – At a meeting of the WV MCLE Commission held on March 13, 2012 the new MCLE Database Program was discussed. Based upon the discussion, it was determined that the MCLE Rules and Regulations should be rewritten to reflect the move to 21st century technology in the delivery and recording of MCLE for WV Bar members. In order to meet a short deadline, a Committee was formed to revise the rules and regulations. Today the full Commission was presented with the work product of the Committee who worked diligently for the past three weeks on these revisions. Thanks to the work of Amy Crossan, Teresa Dumire, Teresa McCune, Steve Thompson, Mike Mellace and Mark Starcher dissemination of the revisions to the Commission occurred today. Special recognition is in order for Teresa Dumire who worked tirelessly on the drafts and kept the communication ongoing throughout the process. A grateful MCLE Commission salutes her efforts on our behalf.
MEDIATION TRAINING SESSIONS – On June 12 and 13, 2012, The West Virginia State Bar’s ADR Committee will present its annual Basic Mediation Training Sessions. The sessions will be held at the Days Hotel in Flatwoods. The sessions provide 14.5 hours CLE credit with 1.0 hour in ethics. Registration deadline is June 6.
