West Virginia Veterans Day of Service
An Opportunity to Serve Those Who Served Our Country
The West Virginia State Bar’s Veterans and Military Affairs Committee will be hosting a webinar on Friday, October 30, 2015.  The webinar will be live in Beckley and will be broadcast to the Veterans Administration Medical Centers in Clarksburg, Huntington, and Martinsburg. The webinar, which will run from 10:00 – 11:40, has been approved for 2.0 hours of general West Virginia CLE credit. Attendance is FREE but attendees will be asked to stay at the VAMC for one hour after the seminar working directly with veterans who will be scheduled for appointments at each facility between noon and 1:00 p.m.  For a list of topics and speakers click here.  For Registration information click here.  Questions?  Contact Anita Casey at caseya@wvbar.org.

Pro Bono Celebration Week – Legal Aid of WV

In recognition of National Pro Bono Celebration Week, sponsored by the American Bar Association, Legal Aid of West Virginia would like to thank our volunteer attorneys who so generously donate their time and expertise for the benefit of low-income and disadvantaged West Virginians.  To learn more about pro bono opportunities at Legal Aid or to sign up for more information go here.

Government Lawyers Reception
All attorneys are invited to the Third Annual Government Lawyers Reception on Tuesday, November 3rd at the Charleston offices of Pullin, Fowler, Flanagan, Brown & Poe, 901 Quarrier Street, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served. A cash bar will be available. Please join us for this opportunity to catch up with old friends and make some new ones!

The 2016 Annual Conference and Meeting of the West Virginia State Bar
The West Virginia State Bar’s Annual Conference and Meeting is the ideal venue to reconnect with lawyers and friends – and to build new relationships – all while enjoying the amenities of West Virginia’s premier resort, the Greenbrier. Take advantage of excellent Greenbrier accommodation rates offered only to our members* and obtain CLE credits at presentations by our Judiciary and nationally recognized presenters. Upon arrival, all are encouraged to attend the State Bar Annual Dinner on Sunday, April 3rd, where Fifty Year Bar Members, Past Presidents of the State Bar and award winners for both the State Bar and Legal Aid of West Virginia will be recognized. On Monday, April 4th, attend the CLE program consisting of 6 hours of presentations that promise to be informative and helpful to your practice. Attendance at the Dinner on Sunday, April 3, and the CLE program on Monday, April 4, is only $195.00. For those who can only attend the seminar on April 4, the cost is $75.00. For those who can only attend the dinner on April 3, the cost is $130.00.

Request for Public Comment on the Amendment to the Rules for Admission to the Practice of Law
The Court is requesting public comment on amendments to the Rules for Admission to the Practice of Law. The proposed amendment would permit the temporary practice of law in West Virginia by the attorney spouses of active service members assigned to a permanent duty station in West Virginia. The Court has approved a 60 day comment period to end on December 15, 2015. Any comments must be filed, in writing, with the WV Supreme Court Clerk’s Office.

Upcoming Events

WV State Bar Regional Meetings 

October 27-29, 2015: The West Virginia State Bar will hold Regional Meetings  this fall. These meetings will provide 3.0 Continuing Legal Education credits, including 2 in the areas of ethics and substance abuse. The seminars have only been approved for CLE credit in West Virginia. Lunch will be included at each meeting. Each Regional Meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will last until, approximately, 1:30 p.m. The cost is $100 per person. One of The State Bar’s Officers will attend each meeting.

October 29 – Oglebay Resort – Wheeling
