Annual Membership Reporting and Fees 2013-14  

PAST DUE 

Active Members who have not completed annual reporting and paid fees, will be assessed an automatic penalty of $25.00 for late reporting of your Financial Responsibility Disclosure and a separate penalty of $25.00 for late payment of fees. If you would like to verify your payment click here. If you have not completed these requirements, Click here for instructions. Click here for a video tutorial on how to submit. 

A notice will be mailed to all active members who have not completed both their reporting and fee payment in a few days.
Sixty (60) days after that notice is mailed, members will be automatically suspended and may not engage in the practice of law until reinstated.

 If you wish to pay and report by paper, forms are available onThe State Bar’s website. There is a $10.00 processing fee for all paper submissions, which must be paid at the time of submission. Members who wish to file online and select to pay by check are not subject to the $10 processing fee.

Lawyer Assistance Program Director Up and Running 

Since beginning work on August 15, our new LAP director has received numerous calls and has met with several individuals seeking help. If you need assistance with substance abuse, depression, or other problems that impact your ability to practice law, or know of someone who could use assistance, do not hesitate to contact George Daugherty.  George can be reached 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at 304-546-8900.  All calls and inquiries are strictly confidential.

Lawyer Referrals 

If you are unable to assist a potential client with a legal matter, please refer the individual to the lawyer referral website (www.wvlawyerreferral.org).  The website provides 24/7 access and allows clients to select the attorney(s) they may wish to contact both by subject area and by distance/location.  Although the website does not yet contain detailed information on practice areas, the Bar is working on supplementing information of general interest, by subject area, and providing links to services and other websites which may be used by the potential client to evaluate whether a referral to an attorney is needed.  Please be sure to notify your staff of this new service.  Questions?  Contact Anita Casey at caseya@wvbar.org.

West Virginia Ethics Commission Training
The West Virginia Ethics Commission will offer a one-hour ethics training session on the West Virginia Governmental Ethics Act on Thursday, September 12, beginning at 10 a.m. at Independence Hall on Market Street in Wheeling, W.Va. The session is free and open to state and local public employees, government lawyers, media and the general public.

West Virginia DRE Course

Drugged driving enforcement got heavy attention in the 2013 legislative session.  Learn the details and defenses to the Drug Recognition Expert Protocol in Morgantown on September 24-25, 2013, at the Waterfront Place Hotel.  19.2 hours of WV CLE credit (1.2 hours of ethics is approved. State Bar Regional Meetings
The West Virginia State Bar is pleased to announce that nine Regional Meetings will be held this fall. These meetings will provide 3.0 Continuing Legal Education credits in the areas of ethics, office management, substance abuse, and/or elimination of bias. Lunch will be included at each meeting.
Each Regional Meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will last until, approximately, 1:30 p.m. The cost is $100 per person. One of The State Bar’s Officers will attend each meeting.
