Students Use Creativity to Promote the U.S. Constitution
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – West Virginia students have channeled our founding fathers as part of the “We the People – the Constitution in our Lives” video contest. The West Virginia State Bar and the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) sponsored the contest for public school students in an effort to spotlight the importance of the U.S. Constitution.
“Our nation was built on the strength of the U.S. Constitution,” said state Superintendent of Schools Jorea Marple. “As we try to develop well-rounded students who become productive adults it is important to engage these young people in civics education.”
The winners of this year’s video contest are:
HIGH SCHOOL
1st place: “All about the Constitution” submitted by Austin Susman of George Washington High School in Kanawha County
2nd place: “We the People” by Megan Davis from Philip Barbour High School in Barbour County
MIDDLE SCHOOL
1st place: “The Constitution in our Lives” by Shamil Patel of Barboursville Middle School in Cabell County
2nd place (tie): “The Making of our Bicameral Legislature” by Daniel Flowers of Mountaineer Middle School in Monongalia County and “An Active American’s Constitution” by Nathaniel Flohr of Taylor County Middle School in Taylor County
Videos were judged on originality, creativity, adherence to the theme and overall quality. Winning videos can be viewed herer, or by visiting the WVDE YouTube channel.
First place winners received $500 while second place finishers won $250.The contest was open to West Virginia public school students in grades 6 through 12.
The creators of the first place videos also were invited to attend The West Virginia State Bar’s Annual Meeting on April 20, 2012 in Wheeling.
