The
West Virginia State Bar is proud to broadcast that Mychal Schulz, sportscaster extraordinaire,
is “More Than A Lawyer.”
In
2008, Mychal was asked by his friend, Pat Hyman, to provide color commentary
for a University of Charleston basketball game; as Pat called plays, Mychal was
to provide insight, strategy, and background. Thereafter, they became the
broadcast team for UC basketball, at home and on the road, and later, for
UC’s football and the men’s and women’s soccer programs. When Jack Withrow
became the voice of UC Sports, Mychal joined him as color commentator. Mychal can
now be regularly heard sharing color commentary for all home games for UC football,
soccer, volleyball, and basketball.
Mychal
also does the play-by-play when UC sporting events overlap. He particularly
likes calling volleyball matches because they are fast-paced and made more
exciting by the players’ speed and athleticism. On one day in 2024, he
called both an NCAA Division II football tournament game on ESPN+ and
the championship match of the Mountain East Conference women’s volleyball
tournament (which W.Va. State won in 5 sets). He has also called
play-by-play for NCAA soccer. Mychal is most proud of being a voice that highlights
West Virginia’s talented athletes.
“Asked
why I devote so much time and energy to calling UC sports, my answer is
simple. I love watching live sports, interacting with the student
athletes, and bringing a quality broadcast to the family and friends of the
athletes who cannot attend matches or games in person. Nothing brings
us more satisfaction than when a parent or fan reaches out to thank us for
making the experience of watching a game so much better. Of course, the
best thanks we receive are when an athlete’s mom or grandmother shows up
at a game and brings us homemade cookies, or better, pepperoni rolls.”
Mychal
showcases his talent for broadcasting as co-host of “The Tailgate Sports Show,”
a sports talk show on WTSQ, 88.1 in Charleston (Sundays at 11:00a). He enjoys the challenge of engaging with avid
sports fans while simultaneously entertaining listeners that aren’t so into
sports. Finally, Mychal is a certified official for the U.S. Tennis
Association and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association; over the past 26 years,
he has officiated matches for the MEC, collegiate matches in Kentucky and Ohio,
and the W.Va. high school state tennis tournaments.
Mychal’s
experience as a litigator with Babst Calland serves him well as a sports commentator,
play caller, and officiant, because litigators need to react quickly on their
feet, be careful observers of the action, and clearly understand the playing
field and the positions of all players. He believes his beyond-the-job
activities support his participation in legal and business organizations, such
as Defense Trial Counsel of West Virginia, where he served as its President in
2025. Thank you, Mychal for using your voice to highlight West Virginia’s
athletes!
Mychal
was nominated by Monica Nassif Haddad.
