What is Law Day All About?
Law Day is a contest open for students in grades K-12 who are attending school (including any public, private, or homeschool program) in West Virginia. Students can submit posters, essays, digital art, and original songs that accompany the Law Day theme selected by the American Bar Association. This year the theme is “From Sea to Shining Sea: Law and the Future of American Democracy,” inviting students to reflect on how the law can preserve American democracy, liberty, and justice for the future. You can read more about the theme in the Law Day Packet below.
How Can Students Participate?
Students have the option to submit essays, poetry, original songs, posters, or digital art as their Law Day entry. Educators can select the medium created by the students, or give students the option of the medium they prefer.
What Else Should I Know?
Be sure to review the submission requirements contained in the Contest Packet. Each submission must contain a Submission Form and be signed by the student, teacher, and parent for each student participating. The submission deadline is noon on April 5, 2027.
We are thrilled to announce that this year’s award ceremony will be held LIVE at the
West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 30, 2027. All
contest participants and their families are invited to attend the awards ceremony, which will
be followed by a reception. Also on April 30, 2027, the contest participants and their
families will also have the opportunity to visit the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals
Judicial Learning Center. The Judicial Learning Center is a modern exhibition space that
provides information about the judicial branch of government and West Virginia’s court
system.
