Position: Municipal Utility Law Intern
Location: Remote
Duration: Semester-based or Flexible Scheduling
Commitment: 10-20 hours per week (negotiable)

About the Internship
The Town of Chesapeake (WV) Municipality and City of Chesapeake (WV) Health & Sanitation Corporations are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Municipal Utility Law Intern to support legal research, policy development, and regulatory compliance efforts within municipal utilities. This remote internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in municipal governance, public utility law, and environmental regulations.
Responsibilities
Conduct legal research on municipal utility regulations, wastewater management, and public health laws.
Analyze federal, state (WV), and local statutes related to municipal utilities, environmental health, and sanitation.
Assist in drafting legal memos, policy recommendations, and compliance reports.
Support ordinance review and development for utility-related legal matters.
Monitor and summarize relevant case law, administrative rulings, and regulatory updates.
Collaborate with municipal officials on legal strategies for infrastructure improvements and service compliance.
Assist in the development of legal frameworks for municipal contracts, grant applications, and regulatory reporting.
Qualifications
Current law students (2L or 3L preferred) or recent law graduate with an interest in municipal law, public utilities, or environmental law.
Strong legal research and writing skills.
Familiarity with municipal governance, utility regulations, or administrative law is a plus.
Ability to work independently in a remote setting.
Proficiency in legal research databases (Westlaw, LexisNexis) and Microsoft Office Suite.
