This opportunity may be filled at one of two levels within the referenced title, based upon education, related work experience and skills.
In coordination with Legal Department management in Columbus, Ohio, and Appalachian Power Company (APCo) management, the successful candidate for this position will primarily represent APCo and Wheeling Power Company before the Public Service Commission of West Virginia, and provide legal advice and support regarding West Virginia regulatory matters. In addition, she or he will assist in representing APCo before the Virginia State Corporation Commission; likely be involved in representing Kentucky Power Company before the Kentucky Public Service Commission; and may be called upon to represent other AEP operating companies, primarily before the following state commissions: Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee.
Representation includes such things as legal research, motion practice, discovery, commenting on proposed rules, drafting legislation, reviewing testimony, presenting company witnesses and cross-examining opposing witnesses in hearing, writing briefs and appellate practice; providing legal advice to management and other company personnel regarding all aspects of public utility regulation; exercising independent legal judgment; and working with outside legal counsel.
JD or LLB degree.
Admitted to practice in West Virginia, or eligible to be admitted under reciprocity rules. Admission to practice in Kentucky a plus.
Minimum of (5) five to (15) fifteen years’ experience with a law firm, corporate legal department or state utility regulatory commission, preferably in West Virginia.
Experience before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission a plus.
Applicants must possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, a good working knowledge of regulatory law, and sound legal judgment, as well as a proven ability for initiative, creativity, good judgment and working independently of direct supervision, while being aligned with the goals of the corporate Legal Department.
