Do I need to be an expert in every area of law to volunteer?
No. Many of the questions are straightforward or involve common-sense issues. You can also choose which questions to answer, so you can stick to areas you feel comfortable with.
How much time does volunteering require?
As much or as little as you want. There is no minimum time commitment. You can log in, select a question, answer it, and log out.
What types of legal questions do people usually ask?
Most questions are practical in nature, such as landlord–tenant disputes, family law, employment issues, and consumer matters. Many are fact-specific and don’t require in-depth research.
Is malpractice coverage provided?
Yes. The program is sponsored by the ABA and provides malpractice coverage for the answers you give through the platform.
Do I have to represent the client in court?
No. Your role is limited to answering the posted legal question online. There is no expectation or requirement of ongoing representation.
Can I choose which questions to answer?
Absolutely. You select the questions that fit your comfort level and schedule. You are never assigned questions without your consent.
Do I need to research and write a full memorandum?
No. Short, practical answers are often enough. If a question is complex, you can provide basic guidance and suggest next steps or resources.
Can I volunteer if I’m retired or inactive?
Yes, if you are still licensed and in good standing (or meet your state’s rules for emeritus/pro bono practice). Many retired lawyers find this program a rewarding way to continue serving.
What if I don’t know the answer to a question?
You are not obligated to answer every question you see. If you’re uncertain, simply skip it and select another question.
What are the benefits of volunteering?
You provide access to justice for people who otherwise may have nowhere to turn. You also gain experience, sharpen your skills, and earn pro bono credit hours — all on a flexible schedule. Furthermore, volunteer hours may also qualify for Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credit, giving you professional development benefits while helping others.
What if I make a mistake in my answer?
The program provides malpractice coverage, and you are only expected to give good-faith, reasonable answers based on the information provided. You are not expected to provide perfect or exhaustive legal opinions.
How do I protect client confidentiality?
The platform is designed to protect confidentiality. Clients post questions through a secure portal, and your communication stays within that system. You should not share identifying details outside the platform.
What if a client wants me to represent them beyond the online question?
First of all, the volunteer lawyer’s identity is not disclosed to the clients. You are not obligated to provide representation beyond answering the question online. If you wish to, you may explore that separately, but it is not part of your commitment to this program.
Will I receive training or support?
Yes. Volunteers receive orientation materials and guidance on how the platform works. Many state programs also offer sample answers and mentor support for new volunteers.
Can new or younger lawyers participate, or is this mainly for experienced attorneys?
This program is a great fit for lawyers at all stages of practice. Newer attorneys gain experience and exposure to common legal issues, while seasoned lawyers contribute their expertise.
