2019 National Celebration of Pro Bono Attorneys
October 20-26, 2019 
To help celebrate the 2019 National Pro Bono week, The West Virginia State Bar invites it’s Bar members to participate in one of our committee sponsored volunteer programs. Since 2014, over 140 West Virginia licensed attorneys have volunteered their time to answer 2,300+ civil legal questions through West Virginia Free Legal Answers. Also, each year West Virginia licensed attorneys answer 1,000 telephone calls through Tuesday Legal Connect.
How to Get Involved:
Tuesday Legal Connect– Every Tuesday evening, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., West Virginia State Bar members volunteer their time to answer questions on a toll-free telephone line. If you would like to participate in Tuesday Legal Connect as an attorney, contact Tina Roberts at 304-343-3013 ext. 2159.
 West Virginia Free Legal Answers – Eligible users post legal questions to a private messaging system. The questions are answered by volunteer attorneys.  If you would like to participate as a volunteer attorney, please click here to register. 
Video Conference Update
The State Bar has upgraded its video conference system and would encourage members, who have attended a video conference in the past, to update your Zoom video conference software on your device. To download the new version go to zoom.us/download, or check for updates by opening your Zoom app window, clicking zoom.us in the top left corner of your screen, and then clicking “Check for Updates”. If you have questions regarding video conferencing with the State Bar, contact Mike Mellace at mellacem@wvbar.org.
TOYS FOR TOTS
The West Virginia State Bar’s Veteran and Military Affairs Committee is participating in the Marine Corp Reserve’s Toys for Tots program again this year. If you are interested in volunteering to help by hosting a drop box, collecting and/or sorting toys, please contact Anita Casey at caseya@wvbar.org. Collections will be done during the month of November.  Sorting and distribution will be done the first two weeks of December.

CLE:  WV – 9 total credits, including 1.8 ethics credits; PA -7 total credits, including 1.5 ethics credits; OH – 8 total credits, including 1.5 for attorney conduct. 
2019 STATE BAR REGIONAL MEETINGS

All meetings will begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at 1:00 p.m.

70th Annual Meeting of the 
West Virginia Tax Institute
Hosts:  The West Virginia State Bar, The West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accounts, The College of Law, The College of Business and Economics, and West Virginia University.  
Location:  Canaan Valley Resort, Davis, West Virginia
CLE:  16 hours of CLE and CPE, including 1 hour of ethics.  
Federal Tax Updates will be Sunday evening’s presentation,  various topics will be presented on Monday, and the West Virginia State Tax Department will be giving a presentation on Tuesday.

Host:  The West Virginia State Bar’s Veterans & Military Affairs Committee.

Topics:  “Board of Veterans’ Appeals, Appeals Modernization Update”, “VA Appeals Modernization”,  “Federal Trade Commission Resources for Military Families”, and “Scam Alerts for West Virginia”
The seminar will be live at the Clarksburg VA Medical Center and will be broadcasted live to the Beckley, Huntington and Martinsburg VA Medical Centers via video conference.  Participants may also attend via video conference.
Locations and Registration:
NOTE:  Participants are encouraged to stay 30 minutes after the seminar to meet with a veterans.

West Virginia State Bar-Young Lawyer Section Bridge The Gap Program
About: Each new lawyer admitted to practice after July 1, 2018 will have twenty-four months after their date of admission to complete the Bridge the Gap Program.
Location: Bridgeport Conference Center – Bridgeport, WV
CLE:  7.8 hours, including 3 hours legal ethics, law office management, and substance abuse
Only Members Admitted after July 1, 2018 may attend.  
For members who will be sworn into the West Virginia State Bar on October 30, 2019, please wait until after you are admitted to register for the November 15, 2019 Bridge the Gap Program.  Registration will be open until November 10, 2019.
