Legal Aid of West Virginia (LAWV) is seeking a skilled motivated attorney to lead our Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program as Program Director. The Program has an outstanding reputation from its highly skilled long-tenured advocates working from within statewide Legal Aid program. Leading ten non-attorney advocates, the Program Director provides vision and leadership to protect the rights of long-term care residents and enhancing their quality of care and quality of life.

The Ombudsman Program Director has overall responsibility for the operation and oversight of West Virginia’s Regional Long-term Care Ombudsman program including the development and implementation of all policies and practices relating to the successful delivery of services and the oversight of all Ombudsman staff. The position also includes education, outreach, and volunteer recruitment.
The Regional Long-term Care Ombudsman Program Director should have a four-year degree, preferably in social work, public administration or gerontology or a minimum of 7 years relevant work experience with comparable responsibilities. Although this Program Director cannot act as an attorney in this role, the Program Director must have a law degree from an accredited law school, be a member in good standing of the West Virginia State Bar (or be eligible to be licensed in WV) and have a minimum of 2 years of experience as a practicing attorney.
She/he must have a demonstrated ability to manage personnel and service delivery in a multi-site program, with the ideal candidate having a minimum of 5 years managerial experience. The Program Director should possess a broad knowledge of the principles and practices of long-term care service delivery to the elderly and the complex issues of aging. She/he should have well-developed administrative skills and experience working in an organization with multiple office sites. The Program Director should have a high energy level and be comfortable performing multifaceted projects in conjunction with day-to-day activities. She/he should have the ability to get along with diverse personalities and be tactful, mature and flexible. She/he should have strong reasoning abilities and informal problem-solving/negotiation skills, sound judgement and be well-organized with good communication skills. The Program Director should possess a participatory management style and be comfortable with the team management approach. Experience working in a non-profit agency or law firm is preferred.
The Charleston office is the largest office in Legal Aid of West Virginia. This position offers a chance to work with a diverse group of advocates and clients on a variety of social justice, elder and poverty issues. While the main office is in Charleston, outdoor enthusiasts are just a stone’s throw from some of the state’s most beautiful landmarks, including the New River Gorge National Park, Kanawha State Forest, and the Hatfield/McCoy Trail. Additionally, the nearby Elk, Kanawha and Coal Rivers offer wonderful kayaking opportunities. Lovers of the arts and culture can spend their days exploring the Clay Center for the Arts and Science and the Capitol Market, and their nights enjoying a great meal at one of many local restaurants. And Charleston is only a few hours from Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Lexington, and Pittsburgh.
